Munger, Tolles & Olson Named to NLJ’s Pro Bono Hot List Three Times Running

Munger, Tolles & Olson was featured on The National Law Journal’s Pro Bono Hot List for the third consecutive year on May 1, 2019. The firm was one of 16 U.S. law firms to be included in the report, which recognizes law firms and lawyers that “have used their legal expertise to take on some of the biggest issues of our time.”

The publication highlighted the firm’s pro bono work in a landmark trial asserting that the State of New Mexico had failed to provide students a sufficient public education and denied them due process and equal protection under the law. A Munger, Tolles & Olson team led by E. Martin Estrada served as co-counsel to MALDEF and the New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty on the two-week trial, which resulted in a victory for the plaintiffs.

The publication also highlighted the firm’s success in shutting down the unconstitutional enforcement of “gang injunctions” in Los Angeles; obtaining a landmark ruling compelling schools run by the Bureau of Indian Education to address the mental health and wellness needs of students; and obtaining a settlement aimed at ending Los Angeles County’s jail-to-homeless cycle.

“Helping people overcome disadvantages through the law not only fulfills a moral duty, it is deeply rewarding,” Mr. Estrada told the magazine. “Whether through impact litigation or representing an individual client, this type of work can fundamentally change people’s lives for the better.”
