Munger, Tolles & Olson Ranks First for Average Pro Bono Hours in The American Lawyer’s 2023 Pro Bono Scorecard

Munger, Tolles & Olson ranked No.1 in total number of pro bono hours in The American Lawyer’s 2023 Pro Bono Scorecard, which is published annually and tracks pro bono work performed by both U.S.-based and international lawyers.

MTO lawyers averaged 203.8 hours of pro bono work in 2022, the most for any firm. Co-Managing Partner Hailyn Chen credited MTO’s “meaty cases” and high-impact litigation as reasons for the significant pro bono count. The American Lawyer highlighted the firm’s work to build a database for its police reform project, which catalogs records of police force and misconduct at more than 500 California law enforcement agencies.

Overall, MTO was ranked No.2 in the Pro Bono Scorecard. The firm’s representation of Mr. Kenneth Walker III, boyfriend of the late Breonna Taylor, was also featured as a matter that exemplifies “Big Law’s capacity to make a difference in the lives of their pro bono clients.” In December 2022, Mr. Walker reached a $2 million settlement with the City of Louisville to resolve lawsuits he filed stemming from the unlawful police raid that led to Ms. Taylor’s death in 2020.
