Munger, Tolles & Olson Attorney Nate Sussman Authors Book Chapter on Generative AI

Munger, Tolles & Olson attorney Nate Sussman has authored a book chapter in Thompson Reuters’ 2024 edition of “eDiscovery for Corporate Counsel,” titled “Generative Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities, Challenges, and Considerations for Attorneys.”

The chapter discusses some of the most important opportunities and challenges currently associated with the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the legal industry and explores various approaches law firms may take to strike a balance between the benefits and risks associated with this emerging technology. In the chapter, Mr. Sussman states that the rise of AI is likely to present the legal industry with some of the “most significant and immediate implications” of any technological advancement since mobile computing.

“On one hand, many of these implications are positive—the power, versatility, and creative potential of generative AI tools stand to improve legal services and work product across a wide range of areas including research, drafting, data analysis, and others,” Mr. Sussman writes. “On the other hand, the functional limitations inherent to generative AI, and the rules that apply when it is used, present risks that need to be managed in order to deploy these tools effectively and responsibly.”

Mr. Sussman’s chapter on generative AI is a new chapter for the 2024 edition of “eDiscovery for Corporate Counsel.” The 2024 edition also includes updates to several other chapters authored by Munger, Tolles & Olson’s legal professionals.

Mr. Sussman’s broad practice encompasses intellectual property counseling, mergers and acquisitions, debt and equity financings, corporate governance, and securities regulation. He has represented a variety of clients ranging from Fortune 500 corporations and global investment funds to emerging companies and well-known individuals.
