Munger, Tolles & Olson was featured in a Daily Journal profile titled, “Munger Tolles bets future on young lawyers, lean teams and institutional culture.” The article examines the firm’s distinctive approach to talent development, client service and high-stakes litigation, as well as its continued evolution as a new generation of leaders rises within the partnership.

The article highlights the firm’s longstanding model of developing elite teams and giving associates meaningful responsibility early in their careers. From taking depositions to shaping litigation strategy, MTO lawyers are trusted to contribute at a high level from the very beginning. As Partner Malcolm Heinicke explained, “If you want to start practicing law from Day One and be trusted with responsibility befitting your credentials, we will do that.”

The Daily Journal also explores how the firm is navigating generational transition while preserving the collaborative culture and mentorship model that has defined MTO for decades. “The next generation of MTO is doing awesome work,” Co-Managing Partner Martin Estrada said. “What really excites me now is seeing these people who years ago were the young lawyers getting early opportunities — seeing them now hit their stride.”

Attorneys interviewed described how access to senior lawyers, including some of the firm’s most prominent figures, shaped their professional development and approach to the practice of law. “There’s not an artificial hierarchy standing in the way of good ideas,” Partner Rose Ehler said. Senior lawyers have actively created opportunities for younger partners to build client relationships and lead significant matters, helping ensure continuity across practices. Partner Bethany Kristovich noted that longtime firm leaders “have done a wonderful job of making way for the next generation,” describing them as “incredibly generous.”

The article highlights MTO’s continued emphasis on strategic judgment over scale, with lean teams handling sophisticated and high-impact litigation, investigations and advisory matters across a range of industries, including antitrust, mass torts, wildfire litigation, constitutional issues, emerging technology disputes and corporate transactions.
