Zach Briers Quoted in LA Times Studios on the Legal Profession’s Artificial Intelligence Evolution

Munger, Tolles & Olson partner Zach Briers was quoted in a recent article titled “Is AI a Career Threat or a Competitive Edge for Attorneys?” published by LA Times Studios. The article explores the growing imperative for legal professionals to develop a sophisticated understanding of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.

Zach, who focuses his practice on complex technology and intellectual property matters, discussed the essential role technological fluency plays in modern legal counsel—particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence, where traditional legal frameworks are rapidly evolving.

“To be effective counselors, attorneys working at the forefront of innovation need to understand the relevant technology at a deep level,” said Zach. “When it comes to technology companies, almost all difficult legal issues turn on granular distinctions in technological advancements. This is particularly true with new platform technologies, such as AI, which defy conventional legal analyses.”

Zach further emphasized that law firms must go beyond forming standalone AI practice groups and work toward integrating technological literacy firm-wide. “Most major firms now have a practice group that is dedicated to AI-related issues,” he said. “But it’s not enough that a few attorneys at each firm become familiar with this disruptive technology. It needs to be a firm-wide initiative.”
