Munger, Tolles & Olson Wins Law360’s 2023 Securities Practice Group of the Year Award
Munger, Tolles & Olson has been recognized by Law360 as a winner of the 2023 Securities Practice Group of the Year award. The annual awards honor attorney teams in 36 distinct practice areas that were behind litigation wins and major deals that resonated through the legal industry over the last year.
An MTO practice group has been recognized by Law360 as a Practice Group of the Year in four of the last five years. This year, practice groups from 84 law firms were chosen by Law360 as winners of the award from a field of more than 800 applicants. As part of the recognition, Law360 profiled MTO’s securities group on March 1, along with five other firms’ securities groups.
MTO partner George Garvey praised the group’s “broad swath of experience,” which “helps in coordinating work and assisting in any corporate issues that may arise.” Partner Elaine Goldenberg added that the group’s work extends beyond the “core” of traditional securities work thanks to expertise in different areas that still impact securities law.
In its profile, Law360 highlighted MTO’s work in several high-profile cases in 2023 and 2022, including the historic appellate win for Grayscale Investments, in which the D.C. Circuit vacated a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) order denying Grayscale’s bid to launch the first spot bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) in the United States. As a direct result of MTO’s victory in that case, the SEC later approved the new spot bitcoin ETPs in a watershed moment for the digital currency industry.
Law360 also recognized MTO’s securities practice group for its appellate win at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit on behalf of Deerfield Management analyst, Robert Olan. The firm secured a favorable ruling from the Second Circuit, overturning a first-of-its-kind criminal conviction that applied insider trading law to the alleged misuse of confidential government information.
