Overview

Jordan D. Segall is an experienced litigator and trial lawyer in the Los Angeles office of Munger, Tolles & Olson.

Jordan has more than a decade of experience representing companies in high-stakes commercial disputes involving copyrights and trade secrets, digital privacy, professional negligence, and fraud and breach of fiduciary duty. He represents clients in a range of industries, with a particular focus on media and technology, legal services, finance, and higher education. He counsels companies at all stages of litigation, from serving as pre-litigation counsel through trial, arbitration, and appeal.

Jordan maintains an active issues and appeals practice, often embedding with defense teams in high-stakes trials to advise on appellate strategy and preservation issues, particularly with respect to damages. He specializes in dispositive motions, procedural motions, writs of mandamus and interlocutory appeals, jury instructions and objections, motions in limine and Daubert motions, and preservation of issues and objections for appeal.

The Estate of Etsuko Toguri as plaintiff in an AAA arbitration involving real estate fraud and breach of fiduciary duty. His team obtained a $30 million award of compensatory and punitive damages. The arbitration award was named a Top Verdict of the Week by the Daily Journal.

UCLA in a complex disability discrimination lawsuit challenging the university’s accessibility in advance of the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics.

See’s Candies, Skechers, Picsart, and other companies in digital privacy litigation regarding the companies’ websites.

Disney in a copyright infringement lawsuit brought by screenwriters alleging that “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl” infringed their screenplay.

Netflix in a copyright infringement lawsuit regarding the hit television series “Stranger Things”.

A leading global law firm against a legal malpractice claim in California state court asserted by a former biotechnology startup client.

A white-shoe multinational law firm against a transactional malpractice claim involving a complicated series of private equity transactions. After aggressively attacking the plaintiff’s causation and damages theories, the case settled favorably before any complaint was filed.

Fortress Investment Group in securing a complete defense verdict in a five-week bench trial in a $480 million case involving a defaulted loan to a life settlements hedge fund. The Daily Journal named the verdict one of the top defense verdicts of the year.

  • Successfully argued an appeal on behalf of former Los Angeles Times journalist Garrett Therolf in the California Court of Appeal that resulted in a published opinion significantly expanding press access to public records regarding children who have died under suspicious circumstances while under the jurisdiction of state child protective services.
  • Lead counsel in collaboration with Rights Behind Bars on behalf of a plaintiff who died in ICE custody during the COVID pandemic.
  • Authored the American Bar Association’s amicus curiae brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission.
