Jennifer Bryant focuses on high-stakes complex litigation, with a particular emphasis on media and entertainment matters.

She has extensive experience litigating and advising on First Amendment, copyright, trade secret, privacy and other constitutional issues.

Jennifer served as trial counsel for Vanessa Bryant in her landmark civil rights victory against the LA County Sheriff’s and Fire Departments for their improper photos of the victims of the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant, Gianna Bryant and seven others. The jury awarded Mrs. Bryant and her co-plaintiff $30 million in damages for their emotional distress, a result that was honored as a Daily Journal Top Verdict. Jennifer also received the Daily Journal’s California Lawyer Attorney of the Year (CLAY) award for her work on the matter.

Before law school, Jennifer was an adjunct writing instructor at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon, and wrote for Flagpole Magazine in Athens, Georgia.

FX Networks and Pacific 2.1 Entertainment Group in obtaining dismissal under California’s anti-SLAPP statute of a defamation and right-of-publicity lawsuit brought by actress Olivia de Havilland involving the series “Feud: Bette and Joan”.

Netflix in obtaining dismissal under California’s anti-SLAPP statute of a putative class action lawsuit involving the series “13 Reasons Why”.

The LA Clippers in a series of cases brought by Madison Square Garden Company challenging the development of the Clippers’ new arena in Inglewood, California.

Electronic Arts in products-liability cases regarding the design of video games.

Fox’s studio and network entities in contingent compensation disputes.

Major media and entertainment companies in confidential investigations of alleged misconduct by senior executives.

Copyright and Trade Secrets Litigation

The National Fire Protection Association, a major standard-setting organization, in litigation challenging their ability to protect standards from infringement after government bodies incorporate them by reference.

Ten-X in obtaining a preliminary injunction against a former executive and a competitor based on allegations of trade secret misappropriation, breach of an invention assignment agreement, breach of fiduciary duty and breach of a confidentiality agreement. The case was ultimately settled for a cash payment, continued injunction and a public apology.

SoundExchange, on behalf of the major and indie record companies and recording artists, in the Copyright Royalty Board’s Web IV proceedings to set statutory royalty rates for non-interactive music streaming.

Constitutional Litigation

California State University in defeating a preliminary injunction in nationally watched litigation related to an alleged transgender student-athlete on the San Jose State University women’s volleyball team.

Susman Godfrey LLP in challenging a presidential executive order revoking security clearances for its employees, restricting its access to federal government buildings and federal government officials, and instructing federal agencies to terminate federal contracts with the firm and its clients. Jennifer was a member of the team that brought suit on behalf of Susman Godfrey within 48 hours of issuance of the executive order and, immediately thereafter, successfully obtained a ruling enjoining its implementation and enforcement.

Jennifer maintains an active pro bono practice focused on impact litigation to promote First Amendment and LGBTQ rights. For example, with co-counsel at Lambda Legal, she represented a transgender veteran in obtaining a permanent injunction barring a local barbershop that had denied service from engaging in further discrimination based on sex.
