Munger, Tolles & Olson Files Lawsuit Challenging Arizona’s SAFE Agreement

Munger, Tolles & Olson, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), and the Ortega Law Firm filed a lawsuit on behalf of three organizations working with immigrants in Arizona. The plaintiffs include Puente Human Rights Movement, Chicanos Por La Causa, and the Florence Immigrant & Refugee Rights Project.

The lawsuit alleges that Arizona state officials and the Trump administration acted improperly when they signed the Sanctuary for Americans First Enactment (“SAFE”) Agreement, which would attempt to prevent the new administration from departing from the Trump Administration’s immigration policies.

Munger, Tolles & Olson partner Martin Estrada, who leads the case, is quoted in the press release:

“In its last months, the Trump administration and certain state officials tried to tie the hands of the Biden Administration to prevent a more equitable and compassionate approach to immigration policy. Those efforts were wrong and unlawful, and our lawsuit seeks to prove that.”
