David Ryan Discusses FBI Warning of AI-Enabled Trade Secret Threats
May 7, 2026
Munger, Tolles & Olson Of Counsel David Ryan was quoted in an Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) article titled, “FBI warns of AI‑enabled trade secret threats, calls for industry collaboration.”
The article discusses takeaways from a recent video interview of Roman Rozhavsky, assistant director of the FBI’s Counterintelligence and Espionage Division, addressing evolving risks related to economic espionage, including virtual recruitment tactics and trade secret theft.
In the article, David emphasized the growing collaboration between U.S. law enforcement and the private sector to combat economic espionage, particularly through initiatives such as the Disruptive Technology Strike Force. He noted that companies — particularly in the semiconductor and AI sectors — “should expect federal law enforcement to aggressively investigate efforts to steal and export sensitive technology.” He added that companies should proactively strengthen their security controls and compliance measures to reduce exposure before incidents occur.
David also underscored the importance of quickly engaging counsel when suspicious activity arises, noting that early intervention can be critical to preventing the irreversible loss of sensitive technology.
