Peter Detre retired from Munger, Tolles & Olson’s litigation department in December 2024.

Peter’s practice focused on complex civil litigation, with a particular emphasis on patent litigation. Peter has represented both patentees and accused infringers in cases involving a wide range of technologies.

Peter was born in Montreal, Canada. He received his B.S. degree from McGill University (with great distinction) in 1980 and went on to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics from UC Berkeley in 1988. Peter was then an assistant professor of mathematics for three years before going to law school. He received his J.D. degree from the Yale Law School in 1994, where he was a senior editor of the Yale Law Journal. Following graduation from law school, Peter served as law clerk to the Honorable Kimba M. Wood of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York (1994-95).
