Munger, Tolles & Olson Continues to Increase Its Commitment to Racial Justice
On April 15, 2021, Munger, Tolles & Olson joined forces with more than 45 other law firms and 17 general counsels from Fortune 1000 companies to provide ongoing pro bono resources to victims of anti-Asian hate crimes and harassment.
The new coalition, known as The Alliance for Asian American Justice (the “Alliance”), will coordinate and drive law firm pro bono resources to support victims of anti-Asian hate in obtaining legal remedies. This includes providing victims with counsel to bring lawsuits for compensatory and other civil remedies or, where appropriate, working with law enforcement to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable.
This collaboration aligns with several other strategies Munger, Tolles & Olson already has in place to help fight racism. Internally, the firm has assembled a Combatting Systematic Racism Task Force, which will work in tandem with the firm’s existing Diversity Committee to develop strategies and solutions against the issues of systemic racism in the legal community and throughout the nation. The firm is also continuing its Public Records Act pro bono effort, a multi-year initiative focused on police reform.
The Alliance will combine the efforts of hundreds of prominent, accomplished lawyers of Asian heritage working in law firms and corporations, leveraging their expertise to advocate for and ensure justice on behalf of those affected. The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAAJ), and other frontline legal and community organizations will perform the initial intake with victims of anti-Asian hate and refer them to the Alliance. Munger, Tolles & Olson will collaborate with The Alliance to provide legal support on these complaints.
Munger, Tolles & Olson is continuing to take concrete actions in its commitment to firm-wide core values: advancing access to justice, seeking greater inclusion and diversity in the legal profession, and supporting the communities in which the firm practices.
