Brad Brian Discuss Virtues of the Firm’s One-to-One Partner-to-Associate Ratio with The AmLaw Litigation Daily

Munger, Tolles & Olson Chair and renowned trial attorney Brad D. Brian was interviewed by The Am Law Litigation Daily for its “Litigation Leaders” series published on August 23, 2021.

In the interview, Brad talks about how his experiences on the baseball field and with the Joffrey Ballet shaped his philosophy on being a lawyer and leader at MTO. Brad discussed the firm’s differentiated business model, which dates back to 1962, when our seven founders – including Charlie Munger – set out to create a nonhierarchical, democratic law firm that hires the brightest legal minds and provides a shorter partnership track.

“These principles have fostered an unparalleled density of legal talent and culture in which lawyers take ownership in solving their clients’ problems from the moment they join the firm,” explained Brad. “This has also resulted in a low leverage environment – what we call our one-to-one partner-to-associate ratio – which means we do not over-staff cases.”

Brad credits the firm’s unwavering commitment to being community impact with providing a “sense of normalcy” during the pandemic. He shared that in 2020, MTO lawyers “devoted over 50,000 attorney hours in support of social justice and human rights matters, donated over $1.3 million to organizations in support of social justice and human rights matters, and launched a task force focused on combatting racial injustice.”
