Law360 Media & Entertainment Group of the Year: Munger, Tolles & Olson

Munger, Tolles & Olson was profiled as a 2019 Media & Entertainment Practice Group of the Year by Law360 on Feb. 14, 2019. The publication recognized the firm for having “long been on the forefront of media and entertainment litigation.”

It is the second consecutive year that Munger, Tolles & Olson has appeared on the list. The firm was one of five selected by the publication.

In its profile, Law360 highlights Munger, Tolles & Olson’s longtime relationships with major players in the media and entertainment industry, as well as the firm’s ability to protect its clients’ rights in an age of rapidly changing technology. The article also notes the firm’s recognition as a Law360 2018 California Powerhouse.

Law360 details the firm’s success on behalf of Disney, Lucasfilm and Marvel in obtaining a preliminary injunction against Redbox regarding its unauthorized sale of digital codes sold in DVD “Combo Packs.” The profile also highlighted the firm’s successful representation of Disney, Warner Bros. and Fox in litigation against the streaming service VidAngel.  The Ninth Circuit rejected VidAngel’s request to revive antitrust counterclaims, and earlier affirmed the district court’s grant of the preliminary injunction Munger, Tolles & Olson won in 2017.

Law360 also noted Munger, Tolles & Olson’s work on behalf of FX Networks and Pacific 2.1 Entertainment Group. The firm won dismissal of actress Olivia de Havilland’s lawsuit alleging breach of the right of publicity and false-light claims based on the FX docudrama “Feud: Bette and Joan.” Following the firm’s victory in the California Court of Appeal, the California Supreme Court refused to revive the suit, and the U.S. Supreme Court denied the plaintiff’s petition for certiorari.
