The Daily Journal honored partner George Fatheree with its 2020 California Lawyer Attorneys of the Year Award on May 13, 2020 for his work with the J. Paul Getty Trust in acquiring the priceless photographic archive of Ebony and Jet magazines.
Mr. Fatheree and attorney Thomas Walper led a team of Munger, Tolles & Olson attorneys who represented the J. Paul Getty Trust in acquiring the priceless photographic archive of Ebony and Jet magazines at a bankruptcy auction. The Getty led a consortium of foundations, including The Ford Foundation, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, in the purchase, which was approved by a bankruptcy judge on July 25, 2019.
The archive, which was purchased for $30 million, includes more than four million prints, negatives and media documenting decades of African American history. Images feature iconic and prominent public figures including politicians, civil rights leaders, lawyers, scientists, musicians, actors, entertainers and athletes, as well as scenes from everyday life. In short, the social and cultural impact of this transaction far outweighs its monetary value.
George Fatheree is a transactional attorney who works on a wide array of commercial real estate transactions. He has also advised museums, educational institutions and other non-for-profit organizations in a variety of corporate, real estate and governance matters.
