Munger, Tolles & Olson Named Again to NLJ Pro Bono Hot List

Munger, Tolles & Olson was named to The National Law Journal’s Pro Bono Hot List for the second consecutive year in a report published April 30, 2018. The annual list recognizes law firms that “have taken on some of the biggest issues of our time.”

The profile highlighted Munger, Tolles & Olson’s successful overturning of the conviction of a death row inmate at the U.S. Supreme Court, winning a 5-4 decision in favor of the inmate on June 19, 2017. The report described the difficulty of death penalty cases at the Supreme Court, which have a “very strong presumption of deference to state court judgments that the death row inmate has to overcome.”

Munger, Tolles & Olson attorney Donald B. Verrilli, Jr. was quoted as saying the case “has the potential to be quite significant as it reinforces and clarifies the scope of the right that capital defendants have to the experts they need to be able to make their case.”

Co-counsel Stephen Bright of Yale Law School said the Munger, Tolles & Olson team’s “insights, analysis and experience were indispensable.”

In addition to Mr. Verrilli, the Munger, Tolles & Olson team included Michael B. DeSanctis and Joshua Meltzer.
