Munger, Tolles & Olson attorney Donald B. Verrilli, Jr. was recognized with the Gould Award for Outstanding Oral Advocacy by the Office of the Appellate Defender (OAD) at its annual “First Monday in October” event on Oct. 1, 2018.
Named after legendary advocate Milton S. Gould, the Gould Award is given annually to two of the nation’s most accomplished lawyers. Mr. Verrilli and Lisa S. Blatt of Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP were recognized.
During the event, Mr. Verrilli and Ms. Blatt argued before a mock U.S. Supreme Court in a hypothetical case based on Madison v. Alabama, which involves the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition against the execution of a person who is incompetent.
As former Solicitor General of the United States, Mr. Verrilli is one of the nation’s premier Supreme Court and appellate advocates. In October 2018, he argued before the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of the International Finance Corporation in a closely watched case involving the scope of immunity granted to international organizations.
