Time Warner Trade Secrets Lawsuit Dismissed

Munger, Tolles & Olson represented Time Warner and several of its subsidiaries, including Warner Bros. Entertainment and Telepictures in obtaining dismissal of a lawsuit alleging the company stole the idea for its ethnically diverse daytime talk show “The Real” in violation of the California Uniform Trade Secrets Act (CUTSA).

The plaintiff, actress Tatyana Ali, claimed Telepictures, produced the show based on her idea after she met with representatives from the defendant companies and shared details of the concept.

On Feb. 24, 2017, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Daniel S. Murphy ruled in favor of all Defendants, asserting that “trade secret law does not protect ‘ideas,’” and that Ms. Ali’s remaining claims of fraud and negligent misrepresentation were preempted by the CUTSA.

Time Warner and its subsidiaries were represented by Munger Tolles attorney Tamerlin J. Godley and Hannah L. Dubina.
