Munger, Tolles & Olson attorneys Mark B. Helm, Kelly M. Klaus, Daniel B. Levin and John W. Spiegel described their experiences as U.S. Supreme Court clerks in a Super Lawyers article published Jan. 19, 2017. Featured among clerks who served between 1965 and 2005, the attorneys shared recollections including historic cases and little-known facts from behind the scenes.
Mr. Helm, who clerked for Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, shared a memory of the chief justice calling for the removal of Hustler Magazine publisher Larry Flynt when he revealed he was wearing an anti-court shirt.
Justice Anthony M. Kennedy’s former clerk Mr. Klaus described what it was like going to lunch with the various justices, including Justice Scalia, who was fond of anchovies on pizza, and insisted that the clerks eat the anchovies as well.
Mr. Levin, former clerk for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, revealed the existence of a basketball court located within the Supreme Court building.
Mr. Spiegel, who clerked for Justice Byron R. White, recalled that Justice White was very physically capable and played basketball with the clerks.
Munger Tolles has a long legacy of recruiting former Supreme Court clerks. At present, 14 attorneys clerked previously for U.S. Supreme Court Justices.
