Munger, Tolles & Olson litigator Manuel F. Cachán has been selected by the Daily Journal as one of 2014’s Top 20 Under 40 lawyers in California.
The Daily Journal considered two important factors in compiling this list: the impact each lawyer’s cases have had on the law, a particular sector of industry or society, and each candidate’s influence within the legal community. Mr. Cachán’s work on the defense team for client Wells Fargo Bank N.A., which culminated in a bellwether jury trial and a complete defense verdict, secured his spot on this year’s list.
In Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota et al. v. Wells Fargo Bank NA, plaintiffs accused Wells Fargo of grossly misrepresenting the risk of placing their investments in its securities lending program.
After a seven week trial and Mr. Cachán’s three-day redirect examination of the key defense witness, the defense was able to show that the cause of the losses the plaintiffs allegedly sustained was the poor market conditions during the 2008 financial crisis.
"Jurors take their work very seriously and they do want to be fair," Mr. Cachán told the Daily Journal. "They can recognize prejudices and want to put them aside. If the jurors have facts, they can fight for you. If they have outrage and a few catchphrases, that usually isn't enough."
Mr. Cachán is a litigator in the Los Angeles office of Munger Tolles. His practice covers a wide array of complex civil litigation matters, with an emphasis on trial practice.
