The Recorder named Munger, Tolles & Olson partner Brad D. Brian one of its “2011 Attorneys of the Year.” The contest names the year’s top attorneys litigating cases in California courts or handling deals for California-based clients.
Mr. Brian was selected for his work on a two-month trial in Los Angeles Superior Court between Trust Company of the West (TCW) and its former bond trader Jeffrey Gundlach, who was fired by TCW and started his own investment firm, DoubleLine Capital Inc. The case is Trust Company of the West v. Jeffrey Gundlach.
The Recorder noted that the trial helped “bond trader Jeffrey Gundlach avoid any damages to former employer Trust Company of the West for breach of fiduciary duty or interference with contracts, while securing a $67 million verdict on his cross-complaint for unpaid wages.” TCW had asked the jury to award it $344 million in compensatory damages plus punitive damages.
The DoubleLine team included Mark B. Helm, Gregory J. Weingart, Kevin S. Allred, Allison B. Stein, Jacob S. Kreilkamp and Laura D. Smolowe.
Mr. Brian is a partner in the firm’s Los Angeles office and has earned a reputation as one of the premier trial attorneys in the United States. He specializes in complex civil and criminal litigation.
