The California Latino Legislative Caucus in conjunction with the California State Legislature has selected Munger, Tolles & Olson litigation partner Vilma Martinez to receive the Latino Spirit Award. A ceremony will take place at the California State Capital in Sacramento on Monday, May 5, 2008. Her work in defending the rights of the underrepresented and her commitment to the Latino community will be recognized. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will be among those in attendance.
The Latino Spirit Awards, given by the Latino Legislative Caucus, recognize pioneers in various professions such as film, athletics, literature, music and public service, who have overcome obstacles to become role models and community leaders. “We are all proud of Vilma for this latest well-deserved honor,” said co-managing partner Mark Helm. The Legislative Caucus celebrates its 35th anniversary this year.
Ms. Martinez, a former President and General Counsel of the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) and staff attorney with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, specializes in federal and state court litigation and employment counseling.
