Munger Tolles Lawyers Show Support for Oxfam America – Launching a Drought Early Warning System Saves Lives

The results are in for the 2007 campaign – Munger, Tolles & Olson attorneys have contributed over $60,000 for Oxfam America for the second year in a row. Over the past 21 years, Munger Tolles attorneys and staff have contributed over $700,000 for programs in the Philippines, Africa, India, Central America, and other places. Working both locally and globally, Oxfam America supports over 230 partner organizations in Africa, Asia and the Americas to help people address the root causes of poverty.

Munger Tolles' 2007 campaign involves a new direction for Oxfam America but one consistent with its strategy of proactively enabling indigenous communities to become self-sufficient. We will be funding the development of a drought surveillance system in Moyale, a border town between Ethiopia and Kenya.

This innovative Drought Early Warning System (DEWS) is designed to identify in advance which droughts in southern Ethiopia could become major disasters. This program has the potential not only to save lives but also to save money: the earlier Oxfam and its partners can intervene with preventive measures, the less costly the humanitarian relief becomes.
