Munger Tolles Wins California State Bar Diversity Award

The State Bar of California has awarded Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP its 2014 Diversity Award. The annual award is given in recognition of “long term, sustained accomplishments toward increasing diversity in the legal profession” to an individual, bar association and law firm.

“We have a long tradition of supporting diversity, and this award inspires us to remain focused on the recruitment, retention and career advancement of diverse attorneys,” Managing Partner Sandra A. Seville-Jones said.

With initiatives designed to bolster the number of historically underrepresented groups in the legal profession, Munger Tolles has built a reputation for an unwavering commitment to diversity. For example:

  • Munger Tolles is ranked No. 5 on The American Lawyer’s 2014 Diversity Scorecard.
  • In the last five years, women and minorities have made up more than 50% of new partners. Of the seven new partners promoted in 2013 and 2014, six are women and four are women of color.
  • We support the retention and advancement of diverse attorneys through various programs, including an onsite day care center, back-up care options and formal mentoring programs. In 2014, the firm was named among Yale Law Women’s 2014 Top Ten Family Friendly Firms.
  • The firm is working to expand the pipeline of diverse attorneys by sponsoring such programs as the Los Angeles Metropolitan Debate League and its 1L Diversity Summer Program.

“From the law school ranks to the law firm partnership levels, we are dedicated to ensuring that diverse attorneys enter and thrive in the legal profession, and we are honored that the California State Bar has singled us out for our efforts,” Diversity Committee Co-Chair Mark B. Helm said.

Munger Tolles was nominated by more than a dozen organizations focused on diversity in the law, including former winners the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Bay Area (AABA) and For People of Color, Inc. “Munger Tolles has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to promote diversity, not only within their own ranks, but throughout the legal community,” stated AABA President Ted Ting in his nomination letter.

Munger Tolles will be presented with the award at the California State Bar’s 13th Annual Awards Reception on Sept. 13, 2014, in San Diego, California.
