In an effort to further support its working parents, Munger, Tolles & Olson recently began construction of a state-of-the-art child care center slated to open in Fall 2009 in the Wells Fargo Center in downtown Los Angeles. The 12,000 square foot facility, Hope Street Friends, is the first law firm-sponsored child care center on the West Coast, and it will serve 88 children from infancy to pre-kindergarten ages. Bright Horizons, a leading provider of employer-sponsored child care, will operate the center.
Munger Tolles co-managing partner Mark Helm told the Los Angeles Daily Journal, “It seems to us an area where the profession needs to make some advances is in helping lawyers to balance the obligations between work and families … I think this is an area where employers in general and law firms in particular are going to find they can help themselves by helping employees.”
Munger Tolles associate and mother of twins, Kate Anderson served an integral role in bringing the idea into fruition, including through the current economic slump. “The benefits of increased productivity, reduced absenteeism and raising morale may be even more important in the tough economic times,” Anderson told the Daily Journal.
Munger Tolles' partners in the venture are O’Melveny & Myers and Oaktree Capital Management. Representatives from each company ‘broke ground’ in a sand box ceremony commemorating Hope Street Friends’ construction.
