Former Munger Tolles Partner Alan Bersin Appointed as “Border Czar” of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security

On April 15, 2009, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano announced the appointment of Alan Bersin as a member of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, serving as lead contact regarding immigration, drug trafficking and border security efforts along the U.S. - Mexico border. Mr. Bersin will be leaving the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority to pursue this new position.

Mr. Bersin was a litigation partner at Munger, Tolles & Olson from 1975-1993. He later served as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California and the Southwest Border Representative for Attorney General Janet Reno, responsible for coordinating federal law enforcement on the border from South Texas to Southern California. Mr. Bersin also spent several years in various capacities in education, as a professor, member of the California State Board of Education and as Superintendent of Public Education in San Diego.
