Munger, Tolles & Olson hosted an orientation program, a series of panel discussions, and a welcome reception for the newest members of the Judicial Intern Opportunity Program (JIOP) on June 5, 2008 at the United States Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles. The JIOP, sponsored by the Litigation Section of the American Bar Association, provides minority and financially disadvantaged first- and second-year law school students the opportunity to spend a summer working for state and federal judges from around the country by matching the students with judges and providing the students with a monetary award.
Munger Tolles attorneys Jeffrey Bleich, Lisa Demsky, Manuel Cachan and Shoshana Bannett spoke at the reception. Mr. Bleich spoke about his experience as the President of the California State Bar and the importance of bar associations. Ms. Demsky, who helped organize this year's program in Los Angeles, gave opening remarks and provided background on the Program. Mr. Cachan participated in a panel on diversity recruitment at law firm, and Ms. Bannett participated in a panel entitled "The Life of A Law Clerk And Beyond." Other speakers at the orientation included Hon. Stephen Reinhardt, Hon. Consuelo Marshall, Hon. George Wu, and Hon. Fumiko Wasserman. The firm has been a sponsor of the program for several years and has hosted the reception in the past, and was proud to host the event this year.
Jeff Bleich is a litigation partner in the San Francisco office. Mr. Bleich’s practice consists principally of complex business litigation including appellate practice, intellectual property, media law, and employment law. After graduating from law school, Mr. Bleich clerked for Judge Abner J. Mikva of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist of the U.S. Supreme Court, and Judge Howard M. Holtzmann of the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal at The Hague. He joined Munger Tolles in 1992, and became a partner in the firm in December 1995.
Lisa Demsky is a litigation partner in the Los Angeles office. Ms. Demsky's practice consists of a wide range of complex litigation and includes the areas of intellectual property, entertainment law, unfair competition and business practices, professional negligence, fraud and business torts. Ms. Demsky joined the firm in 1998 after receiving her J.D. from Yale Law School in 1996, serving as a law clerk to the Hon. Cynthia H. Hall in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from 1996-97, and teaching as a Visiting Lecturer in Law at University of Chicago Law School from 1997-98.
Manuel Cachán is a litigation associate in the Los Angeles office. Mr. Cachán’s practice is principally focused on complex commercial litigation. He joined the firm after serving as a law clerk to the Honorable Arthur L. Alarcón of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Shoshana Bannett is a litigation associate in the Los Angeles office. Ms. Bannett joined the firm after clerking for the Hon. Emilio M. Garza of U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and for Palau Supreme Court.
