Steven M. Perry

STEVE PERRY has practiced law at Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP since 1982.  He graduated in 1978 from the University of North Carolina, and he received his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1981.

While at Munger, Tolles & Olson, Mr. Perry has represented clients from a wide array of industries in complex commercial and intellectual property matters, and he has extensive trial experience, including:

  • Representation of a patentee in a two-month jury trial of antitrust and fraud claims arising out of the patentee’s involvement in a standard-setting organization (2008; jury verdict for our client).
  • Representation of a television network in a trial of invasion of privacy claims brought by 14 plaintiffs (2004; jury verdict for our client).
  • Representation of a patentee in a three-month administrative trial of antitrust claims asserted by the Federal Trade Commission (2003; complaint dismissed).
  • Representation of a major pharmaceutical manufacturer in a contract dispute in federal court in San Jose (2000; directed verdict for our client).
  • Representation of a supermarket chain in a three-month trial of price-fixing claims in San Diego Superior Court (1999; jury verdict for our client was cited by the National Law Journal as one of 1999’s most significant trial victories).
  • Representation of a magazine publisher in a trial of right of publicity and trademark claims asserted by a well-known actor (1999; verdict for plaintiff was overturned on appeal).
  • Representation of a major pharmaceutical manufacturer in a two-month trial of monopolization claims (1987; jury verdict for our client).

Mr. Perry has also had the opportunity to argue numerous appeals in a wide range of cases, including cases pending in the Federal Circuit, Ninth Circuit, Montana and California courts of appeal.  Since 1997, Mr. Perry has argued and won seven cases in the Ninth Circuit, including Hoffman v. Los Angeles Magazine, 255 F.3d 1180 (9th Cir. 2001); Los Angeles News Service v. Conus Communications Co., et al., 2000 U.S. App. LEXIS 3291 (9th Cir. 2000) (unpublished); Sussman v. American Broadcasting Companies, Inc., 186 F.3d 1200 (9th Cir. 1999); Kersis v. American Broadcasting Co., Inc., 1999 U.S. App. LEXIS 15222 (9th Cir. 1999) (unpublished); Dodds v. American Broadcasting Company, Inc., 145 F.3d 1053 (9th Cir. 1998); and DeTeresa v. American Broadcasting Companies, Inc., 121 F.3d 460 (9th Cir. 1997).
