Gregory P. Stone

GREG STONE is a litigation partner in the Los Angeles office of Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP.

Mr. Stone received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 1974 with honors. While at Caltech, he received the Jack E. Froelich Memorial Award and the Donald S. Clark Award, which were given annually to the outstanding junior and senior engineering student. He also co-authored several scientific papers in fluid mechanics and heat transfer.

Mr. Stone received his J.D. degree from Yale Law School in 1977. While at Yale, Mr. Stone received the John F. Casky Prize for trial advocacy. Following graduation, he clerked for one year for the Honorable William Matthew Byrne, Jr. of the United States District Court for the Central District of California.

Mr. Stone joined Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP in 1978.  Since then he has specialized in complex civil litigation, including antitrust, intellectual property, commercial disputes and business torts.  Mr. Stone also has handled complex products liability and toxic tort cases.  He has conducted trials in intellectual property cases, antitrust cases, products liability and toxic tort cases, commercial disputes, real property cases, environmental cases, and criminal prosecutions, including an espionage action involving an FBI agent.  Specific cases recently handled by Mr. Stone include the following:

  • Representation of Rambus Inc. in an antitrust action brought by the Federal Trade Commission and tried during the summer of  2003;
  • Representation of Rambus Inc. in various patent infringement actions;
  • Representation of Philip Morris USA in various cases, including cases brought by domestic and foreign governmental entities, as well as private parties, seeking recovery of health care costs allegedly attributed to smoking, and class actions raising claims of unfair competition and unfair trade practices brought by youth smokers and smokers of “light” cigarettes, among others;
  • Representation of The Vons Companies, Inc. in a trial in a class action case brought against Vons and other supermarket chains alleging price-fixing and other state law violations;
  • Representation of Creative Labs, Inc. in a patent infringement trial involving a fundamental patent covering computer sound card technology;
  • Representation of Alyeska Pipeline Company and certain of its oil company owners in litigation arising out of the Exxon Valdez oil spill;
  • Representation of a major defendant in various litigation arising out of the 1993 E. coli O157:H7 outbreak involving Jack-In-The-Box; and
  • A patent infringement trial involving a patented process for deoxygenating water that allegedly was infringed by the operator of a nuclear power plant.

Mr. Stone has been active within the firm and, among other activities, served a four-year term as Managing Partner.  He also has been active in numerous pro bono and community activities, and currently is serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the Constitutional Rights Foundation and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Pasadena Playhouse.
