Susan Szabo is a litigator at Munger, Tolles & Olson. Prior to joining the firm in 1993, Ms. Szabo served as a law clerk to the Honorable Harry Pregerson, United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit and the Honorable A. Wallace Tashima, United States District Court, Central District of California. While enrolled at Boalt Hall School of Law, she earned awards for excellence in written and oral advocacy, and was elected for enrollment into the Order of the Coif.
Ms. Szabo has represented clients from a wide array of industries (including print and broadcast media, telecommunication, manufacturing, and retail concerns) in matters ranging from complex commercial matters to employment actions. She has conducted internal corporate investigations of and represented major banking, defense, and insurance corporations in federal grand jury investigations and federal False Claims Act matters. Ms. Szabo also has developed a media law practice, which has included the successful defense in state and federal courts of invasion of privacy, defamation, and intellectual property claims arising from newsgathering and reporting. Most recently, her practice has focused on the defense of professional liability claims against lawyers and law firms.
Ms. Szabo’s pro bono efforts have included representation of Salvadoran and Guatemalan nationals seeking political asylum; representation of homeless children in a constitutional challenge to a city ordinance; and representation of children seeking SSI disability benefits. In addition, she has prosecuted state and federal civil rights actions on behalf of undocumented immigrants and prisoners, and is a member of the Central District Pro Bono Civil Rights Panel.
Ms. Szabo has served as a special prosecutor for the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office through the Los Angeles County Bar Association's Trial Attorney Program; there she prosecuted a number of criminal matters, including several jury trials through verdict. Ms. Szabo also teaches trial advocacy and deposition skills for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA).
Since 1998, Ms. Szabo has served as a Judge Pro Tem for the Los Angeles County Courts, and more recently has served as an arbitrator for the Los Angeles Superior Court Alternative Dispute Resolution Program.
Ms. Szabo is a member (and past co-chair, 2006-2008) of the ABA's Attorney Liability Sub-Committee, and a member of the ABA Litigation Section.
Ms. Szabo has been selected for inclusion in Who’s Who in American Law, and Who’s Who of American Women.
