In January 2010, Munger, Tolles & Olson opened Hope Street Friends, an onsite childcare center offering full-time care to children whose parents are at the firm. Built jointly with O’Melveny & Myers and Oaktree Capital Management, it is the first law firm-sponsored child care center on the West Coast. The three neighboring professional services firms created the center to provide working parents with meaningful resources that help them manage the demands of work and family.
Hope Street Friends immediately became a standout option for parents. For two years in a row, in 2012 and 2011, it was voted “Best Daycare Center” by the Los Angeles Downtown News.
True to the firm’s ideals that all attorneys should participate in the management of the firm, an associate initially developed the idea to build a center. Munger Tolles’ then- managing partners, Bart Williams, Bob Adler and Mark Helm, provided the resources and encouragement to help bring the vision into fruition.
The state-of-the-art facility is located in downtown Los Angeles, adjacent to the offices of the three participating firms. The 12,000-square-foot center has the capacity to serve 88 children from 6 weeks to 6 years. It features small class sizes, teachers trained in early childhood education and a curriculum designed to create developmentally appropriate learning environments. Bright Horizons, a leading provider of employer-sponsored child care, operates the center.
